AARON McKay is confident that both Armagh and Dromintee can make real progress when the season resumes in the coming months.

Having previously looked unlikely, competitions are now set to throw in from July for club and October for county.

For Aaron, one of two Dromintee players on the county squad along with Darren McKenna, that means two chances to chase silverware.

“One rewarding factor of playing for Armagh is that you know your representing your club on a bigger stage and you try to do them - along with your family - proud every time you wear the jersey.

“I feel that it has been a good season to date for Armagh, we have started to really perform much more consistently at the level required.

“We have a young team and although that’s not an excuse for not achieving immediate success, I think we are on the right path.

“Covid-19 really hasn’t helped as I felt we were in great form coming into the final two league games and we had a great opportunity to cement our status back in Division One.

“Having watched Armagh churn out Anglo Celts in the ‘noughties’, it is now something I believe this squad is capable of and with that a path to the Super 8s.

“Our supporters are phenomenal and remain ever loyal so after the coronavirus has come to an end and normality has resumed we aim to repay the favour.”

Before that, Aaron will play a key role as John Kennedy’s Dromintee side try to progress through the club championship.

Aaron sees similarities between Armagh and Dromintee – both are young, and both also have the ability to make rapid progress.

“At present with the club it is quite a similar situation as the county. “We are young and have potential. Hopefully we can shake off that tag and progress to the latter stages of the championship and further.”

Aaron has been involved in juvenile coaching at the club as well as the local primary schools in the class.

He is heartened by what he sees happening currently, and he feels that even better days lie ahead given the effort being put in.

“The work that goes on around the club is phenomenal and words can’t do those that volunteer to do it week in week out justice.

“There are so many brilliant people around our club at present. It would be to hard to name them all but a few that spring to mind would be Ray Harris, Declan Conlon, Declan McBennett, Aidan O’Rourke and Aidan Rice. They have taken everything to a whole new level.

“We have all seen how unbelievably organised and run our club underage tournaments are ran as teams from across the country travel to compete. Underage teams across the club, in both the men’s and ladies’ game are at a level way beyond their years.

“I went to a schools match a few months back and seen young fellas from Dromintee displaying skill only seen in Croke Park. Points off both feet, diving blocks and putting their heads in where some wouldn’t put a stick.

“Hopefully I’m still fit to kick a ball when they are playing senior. There is no doubt our club is in safe hands with the people involved and it can only continue to grow and prosper into the future.”
