ARMAGH star Aoife McCoy is confident that Dromintee can continue their strong association with the Orchard ladies side in the coming years.

The half-forward is one of three club members on the current Armagh panel alongside Shauna Grey and Nicole McKenna.

Aoife said that it’s extra special to play alongside clubmates, and she hopes that plenty of young girls coming through the club get to experience it too.

“I love playing alongside Dromintee girls,” she said. “They are people you’ve played with since you were underage and over the years we’ve consistently had a couple of girls, if not more, on the panel at the one time.

“Nicole’s just joined the panel this year so she’s officially a newbie! It’s exciting to have new club players join the team and also shows that there are plenty of opportunities for other girls to make that push.”

Ladies football in Dromintee is currently undergoing a bit of a restart. While numbers are low at senior level right now, there are big groups coming through the underage ranks that were no doubt inspired by their thrilling Intermediate final win over Forkhill two years ago.

“For the future, I have high hopes. There is a lot of time and effort being invested into underage football in the club and I think it’s paying dividends.

“There’s a lot of talent in the younger generation and I believe in a few years time we could have a really strong team.”

Like everyone else, Aoife was boosted by the news that we may see Gaelic games returning in the coming weeks.

How that will look remains uncertain, but Aoife is looking forward to meeting up with her club and county teammates when the plans are finalized.

“It’s hard to know what is going to happen over the next coming months.

“There’s obviously been a plan put in place now in terms of club and county but players are still being given the opportunity to give their feedback so there is still a bit of uncertainty as to how it will all pan out.

“I’m missing all the girls and being on the field so I’ll be looking forward to getting back whenever that may be.

“We will be training and playing in a format that we aren’t used to so will just have to see how it goes but everyone is going to be in the same boat so it’s going to be all to play for.”
