Our Senior Men kicked off their 2022 League campaign in a tightly fought contest against neighbours Killeavy yesterday afternoon.
While both teams were without first team players, it presented the opportunity to other players to lay their mark on positions across the park.
Dromintee presented debuts to Dylan McGahon in goals, Adam Markey at corner back, Aaron McArdle in the middle of the field and these were joined later in the game by Gareth Martin and Aaron McManus.
On the throw in, Dromintee won the ball and with the first move of the game Gareth Kilgallon dropped a high ball on top of Aidan Morgan who won the mark and converted to register the first score of the game after 2 minutes.
Killeavy responded with their own scores in the 4th and 7th minutes of the game. Then Ryan Gaskin won a ball in his half back line and broke at pace to off load the ball into Shea McArdle who converted to leave the teams two a piece after just eight minutes.
Sides remained level until the 20th minute when Adam Markey broke out of defence delivering a ball to Oran Loughran who launched a high ball into Cathal McKenna who took his mark and converted the score to go one ahead.
Killeavy won their kick out and retained position before kicking a long range point in the 23rd minute. Dromintee responded with their own scores from a free converted by Oran Loughran in the 27th minute. Then disaster struck when Aidan Morgan, while fielding a high ball in injury time, landed only to injure his hamstring. Gareth Martin replaced Aidan and on his introduction made an immediate impact getting the final score of the half to Dromintee 0-05 to Killeavys 0-03 going into the break.
At the start of the 2nd half Killeavy narrowed the score line to a single point from a 50 in the 32nd minute. Dromintee responded with an inspirational run of 30 yards up the field by PJ Tieran who delivered the ball in to Oran Loughran who converted the score in the 35th minute.
Oran was at hand in the 38th minute to convert a free following a foul on Ryan Hughes. This was followed by pressurised defending by Gareth Martin who won the ball in the half back line and delivered it across the top to Gareth Kilgallon who was closing down on the Killeavy goal keeper 1 on 1.
A goal was written all over the move only for the Killeavy ball stopper to push the ball over the bar in the 39th minute. Following an exchange of moves up and down the field, Dromintee won a kick and again Kilgallon broke down the field only to loose the ball on what looked like a foul.
Killeavy won the spilled ball and Referee waved play on only to give Killeavy a free for a similar foul straight in front of the posts at the other end, which Killeavy converted in the 45th minute, followed by a well taken point from play in the 47th minute.
That score against the run of play plus a black card for Aaron McArdle in the 48th minute would change the momentum back in the visitors favour. Dromintee's last score of the game came in the 51st minute of the game when Kilgallon converted what was the score of the match from between the 45 and 21 meter line out along the side line. Killeavy secured the next two scores to draw the game level and on the final whistle both teams shared the spoils.
The club would like to thank the Senior Mens team and management for their efforts and to all the volunteers that supported over the course of the afternoon.
