Temporary Traffic Plan Twin Towns Commencing Tue 12th April 2022

To facilitate the ongoing repair work on Stranorlar Bridge, the traffic will have to be reduced to single lane. Stop/Go and traffic lights previously have led to lengthy tailbacks and bottleneck traffic in the town area, which affects all our businesses, schools and visitors alike.

After consultation with Donegal County Council and the contractor, Jons Civil Engineering Ltd, we have decided to operate a one-way system through the town, whilst this will increase the journey by a few minutes, it should alleviate the bottleneck problem which normally occurs with a Stop/Go system

How it will operate:

Traffic travelling North, i.e. coming from Ballybofey travelling towards Stranorlar:

• This traffic will flow as normal with no change, the bridge will have one lane open to this traffic

Traffic travelling South, i.e. Coming from Stranorlar travelling towards Ballybofey:

• Millbrae will be closed; no traffic will be permitted to travel down towards the Finn Valley Leisure Centre

• All traffic travelling toward Ballybofey will turn left at Bus Eireann onto Railway road

• Traffic will then be able to continue on at the Finn Valley Junction as there will be no traffic coming down Millbrae

• At Dreenan junction, traffic will turn right (traffic from Crossroads will be slowed/stopped by traffic lights to keep main route flowing).

• At Finn park traffic will turn left with local access permitted onto Navenney Street

• Traffic will Turn right at Charlie Bonners/Igloo

• At Lidl/Dunnion Car sales traffic can proceed left or right

Traffic travelling from Sessiaghoneill/SuperValu towards Finn Park:

• Traffic will turn left toward Lidl/Dunnions to allow HDV’s to take the full junction at Finn Park more quickly.

This pilot system will be in place until the works are completed on the bridge, approx. 2 – 3 weeks.

Whilst it will cause slightly longer journey time travelling South, we feel it is the best option possible, please see map below for illustration of Southbound route.
