Dromintee u16s may have needed a replay to finish the job but they captured the first championship at this age grade in the club’s history in some style at a wet and windy Clady Sean South GAC.
With the elements at their back in the first half, the Dromintee lads appeared nervous and snatched at a number of scorable chances in the early stages. Influential centre back Tomás Fox had to leave the field of play after a clash under a breaking ball and the team took some time to resettle after his loss.
St Peter’s struck for a goal against the run of play midway through to keep in touch but last year’s u15 champions tagged on five more points to close the half leading 0-08 to 1-03.
Dromintee resumed with a renewed energy and the seeds of victory were sewn through dominance on St Peter’s kick outs. The South Armagh lads controlled possession and added five points without reply to open a seven point gap ahead of the final quarter. Some of the points kicked were of the highest quality and through brilliant team play – a hallmark of this group.
It would take the Lurgan lads some fifteen minutes to register a score in the second half, by which time Dromintee were in control in every sector of the pitch. St Peter’s were held to four points in total after half time due in no small part to the relentless tackling of their opponents.
The final nail arrived through a brilliant run and finish for goal from Oisin Byrne as the final whistle approached. Dromintee closed the game out comfortably from there to finish deserved winners on a scoreline of Dromintee 1-16, St Peter’s 1-07.
