“ Club success is built on a strong adherence to core basic principles. “That was the unequivocal message coming from two time All Star & All Ireland winner Enda Gormley at the launch of the Cairde Dhromainn Tí scheme on Saturday night.
Derryman Gormley was part of the coaching team behind the four Ulster minor titles won by the Watty Grahams Glen club who now contest the senior Ulster final against Kilcoo.
Speaking to the Dromintee coaches Gormley majored on a message of good basic skills, good discipline and good coaching structures as the foundation for success across both genders.
While stressing a need for collective fun Gormley said the fun element cannot disrupt team discipline whereby players at all age groups must have a singular collective goal in order to achieve success.
Gormley was joined on stage by James Daly, and two of the clubs county stars Aoife McCoy and Aaron McKay for a discussion around the elements required in creating an environment in which players can fulfil their potential.
Among the areas covered were strength and conditioning, nutrition, video analysis, medical assistance and physio.
Glen are currently one of the clubs reaping the rewards at senior level from the policies and people put in place in the last decade and the All Star corner forward was quick to point out the need for fresh voices to work with each team on an ongoing basis to avoid staleness setting in.
Such was the passion and knowledge that Gormley imparted it would have been easy to listen at length to his sage like advice in plotting a pathway forward.
Many thanks to our speakers and to all who attended. Full details of the Cairde Dhromainn Tí will now be forwarded to coaching groups and interested parties.
